CONTEMPORARY SURVEY
Class Description
This critique-centered course examines how the contemporary art world, gallery systems, fairs, residencies, and grants factor into the artist's practice. Over the 8 weeks, we will discuss galleries and studio models of contemporary artists. Alongside critiques, artists will craft artist statements, practice presenting, and work on organizational discipline within the studio. The career-driven components of the course will be balanced with exercises, readings, and discussions to deepen and strengthen the authenticity of one’s practice. The discussions and presentations will be taken as cornerstones for the ensuing critiques of both work and statements. There will be two guest lectures by a gallerist and a professional artist.
